Usage
The Ashley Mid-Line Loop puts a fixed, directional loop in the middle of a rope — no rope ends needed. It is built by tying a clove hitch on a bight and pulling a bight through, which leaves you with a loop that holds firmly when pulled from the standing part — the side of the rope under load — and comes undone with little effort even after heavy strain.
Why Learn the Ashley Mid-Line Loop?
Most people know this structure under another name: the cowboy bowline — a bowline with the tail finishing on the outside of the loop instead of the inside. Downsides
- Not Bi-Directional: The loop can collapse if loaded from the wrong direction.
- Loosens Under Pulsing Load: It tends to work loose under cyclic loading, so add a backup for anything consequential.
- Easily Confused: It looks nearly identical to a standard bowline — the only tell is which side the tail exits.

Underneath, this is a bowline-family knot: a single nipping loop that clamps shut under load. The defining difference from the standard bowline is that the tail (or the reeved bight, in the mid-line construction) sits outside the eye rather than inside it — the same structure you get from a clove hitch on a bight with a bight pulled through.
History
Clifford Ashley catalogued this tail-outside structure in The Ashley Book of Knots (1944), calling it "distinctly inferior" to the standard bowline — sailors, he noted, often tied it by mistake when mooring. Under the name Lapp Knot, the same structure has a documented history in Lapland, where it was used for hitching reindeer to sledges and suspending sheath knives.
How to Tie the Ashley Mid-Line Loop
Step 1
Form a clove hitch on a bight of the rope — no rope end needed.

Reeve a bight of rope through the clove hitch to form the loop.

Dress and set the knot to complete the fixed mid-rope loop. Check before loading: the tag end should sit on the OUTSIDE of the loop — if it sits inside, you have tied a regular bowline instead.
