It credited the German climber Bernd Strasser and took the name of his home region — the Swabian (“Schwabisch”) land near Stuttgart. The credit is best read as naming rather than inventing, though: the same asymmetric-coil Prusik appears about 25 years earlier in caving literature, in Bob Thrun’s Prusiking (1973) and again in On Rope (1987). Like the Munter hitch, it carries the name of the person who popularized it, not the first person to tie it.

How to Tie the Schwabisch Hitch

Step 1

Take a length of round accessory cord thinner than your main line — commonly 8–10 mm (about 5/16–3/8 in) cord on an 11–13 mm (about 7/16–1/2 in) host rope. Make four wraps around the main rope, coiling up the line.

Step 2

After the fourth wrap, bring the tail back down and make one more wrap at the bottom in the opposite direction, tying a half hitch around the main rope. Both tails should now exit the hitch together at the bottom.

Step 3

Join the two eyes in front and clip them together with a carabiner.

Step 4

Dress the coils neatly with the stacked “max” wraps toward the load, then set the hitch by weighting it in its working direction. Check that it grips when loaded and slides when you unweight it.
