How to Tie the Marlinspike Ladder
This is the classic two-rope build taught by Scout Pioneering and corroborated by Animated Knots by Grog. John Thurman's rule from Pioneering Principles is the one to memorize: "The vital thing to remember is that the knotted part of the hitch must be under each ladder rung so that when a weight is put on the rung the knot will work in support." Step 1
Take two lengths of rope (or one rope doubled and anchored at the top) to serve as the ladder's two sides.
Step 2
At the first-rung position on each rope, form an overhand loop with the working end on top of the standing part.
Step 3
Fold the loop up and over the standing part — the side under load — so the standing part shows through the center of the new loop, creating a pocket.
Step 4
Insert the rung — a stick, spar, or dowel, ideally about 3 ft x 2 in (0.9 m x 5 cm) — through the loop on each side: over the near side of the loop, under the standing part, and over the far side.
Step 5
Pull the working end and standing part together to tighten the hitch around the rung.
Step 6
Repeat at the next rung position on each rope, spacing the overhand loops roughly 15 in (38 cm) apart for about 1 ft (30 cm) of finished rung spacing.
