How to Tie the Knut Hitch
Usage
The Knut Hitch gives a tree climber one friction hitch that holds when you sit back on it and still slides up the line when you push it, so you can ascend, rest and reposition without swapping gear. It is tied in a separate eye-to-eye (split-tail) cord: four turns up the climbing line, finished with a bight tucked without a twist to make a half hitch around the line and the pendent leg.
It is used on single-rope and doubled-rope climbing systems, on work-positioning lanyards and flip lines, and for progress capture.
Why Learn the Knut Hitch?
Its grip is adjustable by hand, without retying. Set the locking half hitch close to the coils for a firmer grab that is harder to break loose, or drop it lower so the coils release more easily and it tends all day — an adjustment set out in Reecoil's guide to fundamental friction hitches.

- Tied below a mechanical descender as a hands-free backup, though reports are mixed: it has been reported sliding rather than locking when bunched. Verify it locks under your own weight; some climbers use a Schwabisch Hitch instead.

Blake's Hitch vs. Knut Hitch
Climbers switch between the two; Blake's Hitch is the older standard.

- Disadvantage: Blake's is tied in the climbing line's own tail, so it needs no separate cord.
Schwabisch Hitch vs. Knut Hitch
Both are asymmetric closed friction hitches.
- Advantage: the Knut is prized for a quick grab and a compact form.
- Disadvantage: some find the Schwabisch avoids the bunching the Knut is prone to.
Security Level
Treat it as secure only when dressed correctly and matched to the rope. Grip comes from the cord-to-line diameter ratio and clean coils, not the shape alone, and it needs tension to bite: it can creep or slide when bunched or under-loaded. For rock climbing or rope rescue, use a tested hitch such as the Klemheist Knot.
Downsides
- Binds after heavy loading: it can over-tighten and be hard to break loose.
- Dressing-sensitive: let the terminal ends bunch against the coils and it binds and stops advancing.
- Ratio-dependent: a cord too close in diameter to the line will not grip, or will not release.
- Needs tension: it creeps when under-loaded, so it is a poor backup you are not watching.
- Easy to confuse: lookalikes include the Distel Hitch and the Michoacán Hitch, and its name is mixed up with the unrelated Knute hitch, a tool-lanyard knot.
History
The hitch is named after the arborist Knut Foppe, who introduced it to tree climbers around 2001. Mark Adams learned it from Foppe directly that November and published the account in Son of a Hitch: A Genealogy of Arborists' Climbing Hitches. Adams reports that Todd Kramer independently arrived at the near-identical TK hitch a year or two later without knowing the Knut existed; the two differ only in whether that last bight is twisted.
How to Tie the Knut Hitch
This is the original method, recorded from the inventor. The Knut Hitch is covered in the Knot IQ app, worth having open at step four.
Step 1
With an eye-to-eye (split-tail) hitch cord clipped to the climbing line, make four turns spiralling up the line. Direction is handedness-dependent, so mirror it to the hand you tie with.
Step 2
Adjust so the bottom leg is longer than the top leg, then drop the top leg in front of the bottom leg.
Step 3
Form a bight of the bottom leg and pass its end behind the climbing line and behind the pendent top leg.
Step 4
Tuck the end of the bottom leg up through the bight without twisting it, forming a half hitch around the climbing line and the pendent top leg. Twisting the bight here makes the TK hitch instead.
Step 5
Dress both terminal legs to the same length and keep the ends and the half hitch clear of the four coils. Set it snug against the line before loading.
FAQ
Is the Knut hitch the same as the Knute hitch?
No. The Knut, after the arborist Knut Foppe, is a friction hitch for climbing a rope; the Knute attaches a lanyard to a tool. They only sound alike.
What size cord should I use?
The consensus window is about 5/16 to 3/8 in (8 to 10 mm) eye-to-eye hitch cord on a 7/16 to 1/2 in (11 to 13 mm) host line. Always test grip and release before climbing.
Why does my Knut keep binding or getting hard to advance?
Almost always because the terminal ends have bunched against the four coils, or the half hitch is set too close to them. Keep the ends clear and tune the half-hitch position.
Important Notes on Safety
This hitch must be matched to your rope diameter and cord material, and both grip and release must be tested — with your weight on it, feet still on the ground — before you climb. An ill-matched or mis-dressed Knut can creep, slide or bind. It carries no dedicated strength or security testing and no rescue-organisation or UIAA endorsement: its record in tree work is not permission to transfer it into rock-climbing or rope-rescue systems. Use it inside a system, backed up, as arborists do.
