Downsides
- Fails on Straight-Sided Objects: The one to know before you rely on it. The grip needs a shoulder — a taper or bulge — for the loops to seat above. On a straight cylinder (a smooth tumbler, a flat disc) there's nothing to catch on, so the sling migrates to the center of gravity and slips off. Not a knot failure — the wrong object for the geometry.
- More Rope, More Time: It uses more cordage than the 2-legged version, and the extra loop and dressing make it slower to tie.

Structure
Start with an ordinary overhand knot and open it out flat instead of drawing it tight; its two lobes become a loop on each side of the seated object. How to Tie the Barrel Hitch (4-Legged)
This method builds the sling from one continuous loop of rope, the clearest way to see how the four legs form.
Step 1
Take one continuous length of cordage and join both ends with a strong closing knot — a fisherman's bend works well — to form one complete loop.
Step 2
Hold the closing knot in one hand and stretch the loop out to find the center point on the opposite side.
Step 3
Put a single deliberate twist in that opposite side, so the two cords cross. Don't skip this — it's the single most common point where beginners lose the shape of the knot.
Step 4
Bring the barrel or container up into the loop and measure so the crossing point sits just below the top edge of the container.
Step 5
Take the side of the loop nearer the closing knot, pass it over the top of the container, and down through the loop at the crossing point — keep both strands flat and parallel, with no extra twists.
Step 6
Separate the two ends and pass them over the top of the object.

Pull up gradually until the four-legged sling comes into shape.

Reposition the cords so the four legs sit evenly spaced and the crossing point is centered — check the bottom to confirm it's sitting square before you trust it with weight.
