How to Tie the Anti-Twist Coil
Usage
The anti-twist coil is how you wrap an extension cord, garden hose, or cable so it stores flat and pays out without twisting, kinking, or tangling. Instead of winding every loop the same direction, you reverse the direction of every other loop — "over" then "under" — so each loop cancels the twist the last one added. Most trades that use it call it the over-under method.
Why Learn the Anti-Twist Coil?
A standard same-direction coil adds one full twist with every loop, and all that stored twist comes back out as loops and kinks the next time you unwind. Reversing direction every other loop cancels the twist instead of stacking it, so the material lies flat and deploys clean. The same trick, under different names, is the working standard for electricians, AV and production techs, ham-radio operators, and gardeners alike — anyone who has to coil and uncoil the same length of material over and over.

- Coiling and storing extension cords — prevents the memory and kinking that plain wrapping causes. Coil loosely, don't secure with tape, and don't plug the male and female ends together for storage.

- Coiling and storing garden hoses without kinks. A stiff or cold hose coils easier after warming in the sun; tie off with twine and hang.

Downsides
- Confusing at First: the alternating direction is genuinely counterintuitive on the first few tries, and beginners often revert to same-direction coiling partway through without noticing.
- All or Nothing: it fails completely if the alternation is broken or the coil is unwound from the wrong side — a knot can appear with every other loop even in a correctly made coil.
- Not a Carry Method: it's documented for static storage of cords, hoses, and cable — no source describes it as a body-worn way to carry long rope. For shouldering a climbing rope, the Alpine Coil is the purpose-built technique.
History
The twist-cancelling idea is at least 80 years old in print: Book of Knots (1944) describes figure-eight flaking for stiff cable and large hose — the same alternating-direction logic, decades before extension cords made it a household need. The modern "over/under" name traces to 2010s AV and production trade writing, spreading from there through blogs and video; Wikipedia's Coiling article cites John Fielden's Roll Sound! (2010) as the earliest formally published source for the terminology. By 2023 the technique was famous enough to be satirized: xkcd #2810 shows AV techs, rock climbers, sailors, and topologists all insisting they invented "the right way" to coil a cable.
How to Tie the Anti-Twist Coil
Step 1
Hold the cord, hose, or cable end in your non-dominant hand and let it hang naturally.
Step 2
With your dominant hand, grab a section about arm's length away.
Step 3
Twist the cord OVER to form the first loop.
Step 4
Slide down to the next arm's-length section.
Step 5
Twist the cord UNDER — rotate your wrist and bring it up from underneath — to form the second loop. This reverses and cancels the twist from the first loop.
Step 6
Continue alternating over, under, over, under until the full length is coiled, each loop landing flat and relaxed.
Step 7
Secure the coil with string, a Velcro strap, or twine, then hang or store it.
Keep the loops loose and roughly uniform — tight winding puts a "memory" into cord and hose that keeps it from lying flat — and tie the ends off on the outside of the loops, never through them. Why does my extension cord keep twisting into loops when I unwind it?

Important Notes on Safety
Nothing here bears load, but a few habits save your gear: don't wind tightly around hand and elbow (it creates cord memory and stresses internal wires), don't secure the coil with tape (residue, and it can damage insulation), and don't plug a cord's male and female ends together for storage (it stresses the connections).
