How to Tie the Alpine Coil

Step 1
Hold the rope about 3 ft (1 m) from its end with one hand.
Step 2
Grasp the rope with your other hand as far away as you can comfortably reach, then bring your hands together to form a loop. Transfer the loop to the hand nearer the rope's end.
Step 3
Repeat, forming uniform loops, until the whole rope is coiled.
Step 4
Bring both ends to the top of the coil and form a bight — a short loop — in the standing end (the side you are not wrapping with).
Step 5
Wrap the working end around the strands of the coil and the bight together, working forward so each new wrap sits closer to the bight.
Step 6
When only a short tail remains, tuck the working end through the bight.
Step 7
Pull the standing end of the bight to cinch it down and capture the working end tight. If both ends are long enough, you can finish by tying them together with a reef knot for extra security.
