How to Tie the Trinity Loop

Usage

The Trinity Loop puts a fixed loop into the middle of a rope without touching either end — for a ridgeline, a camp line, or any cord you would rather not undo to add an attachment point. The loop is formed from a bight of the rope itself and locks into a small three-part collar in which both standing legs and the loop's own leg interlock. That collar is where the name comes from. One thing to clear up first: this is a rope knot. Search "Trinity Knot" and most of what comes back is a way of tying a necktie.

Why Learn the Trinity Loop?

The honest case for the Trinity Loop is where you can tie it, not how strong it is. Being formed from a bight, it goes in anywhere along a rope that is already set up, with no end access and nothing to undo first. That is called tying in the bight, and it is a category of its own in the PACI knot study guide compiled by Mark Gommers. The finished knot is compact — lower in bulk than a lot of mid-line loops — and simpler to tie than the Alpine Butterfly Knot. What it is not is a tested knot, so keep it on jobs where a failure would be an annoyance rather than a disaster.

History

There is not much of one, and that is worth saying plainly. The Trinity Loop does not appear in The Ashley Book of Knots, and no book, knot database, forum thread or video documents it under this name anywhere else — the earliest record of it is the Knot IQ catalogue. One naming point needs correcting: the "Ashley Midline Loop" it often gets compared against is not a name Clifford Ashley ever used. The knot that comparison means is real — Ashley catalogued bight-tied mid-line loops at #532 and #1055 — but the compound name is a modern label, not his.

Security Level

Dressed evenly and pulled roughly along the line, the Trinity Loop holds — the collar closes on itself and stays put. Pull it well off that axis and it gives up ground; it is less forgiving under extreme off-axis loading than an Alpine Butterfly. The bigger point is what is missing. No strength or security testing exists for this knot, so do not use it for life-safety or any load whose failure matters until that changes, and add a stopper or backup knot anywhere a line carries something consequential.

Downsides

  • Tightens Firmly Under Heavy Load: it snugs down hard once you really load it. Ease all three collar parts apart together rather than yanking any single strand.
  • Needs Careful Dressing: the collar has to be seated symmetrically, or the three parts do not share the load as intended.
  • Less Forgiving Off-Axis: under extreme off-axis loading it does not cope as well as an Alpine Butterfly.

When Not to Use the Trinity Loop

Do not use the Trinity Loop as a mid-line anchor or tie-in point for climbing, or anywhere a failure would be serious — there is no strength, cyclic or shock test data for it and no independent verification of its structure. Use the Alpine Butterfly Knot or the In-Line Figure Eight Knot instead.

How to Tie the Trinity Loop

Step 1

Form a bight at the point in the rope where the fixed loop is needed. You do not need access to either rope end.

Step 2

Weave the bight through the three-part locking structure — the triangular collar that interlocks both standing ends and the loop's own leg.

Step 3

Draw the loop out to the size you need, keeping the three interlocking parts seated as you go.

Step 4

Dress and set the knot so the collar closes evenly and symmetrically around all three parts, forming the compact attachment point.
