How to Tie the Sylvain Bowline
Usage
The Sylvain Bowline is a fixed loop knot for lines that go slack and snap tight over and over — most famously a flapping jib or genoa sheet, the exact situation that works a plain bowline loop loose. It holds through that repeated slack-then-snap loading and still unties easily by hand once the load comes off.
French sailors also use it to attach mooring lines to rings and jib sheets to cleats, and as a utility loop.
Why Learn the Sylvain Bowline?
Because it fixes the bowline's best-known bad habit. A bowline on a flogging sheet can shake itself loose; the Sylvain's locking pass is braced against the standing part, so the knot cannot turn itself inside out when the line goes slack. The grip tightens progressively under tension without changing shape, and part of the structure stays uncinched so you can shift it by hand to release once the line is slack.

Is It Really Stronger Than a Bowline?
You may see the claim that the Sylvain is 10–15% stronger than the bowline. Treat it as unverified: it traces to a single load study repeated by the French sailing press and French Wikipedia, with no published method or data. There is a plausible structural reason it could out-hold a bowline — the extra friction pass under the whole knot — but until an independent break test exists, the number is a claim, not a fact. Security Level
Secure when dressed and set correctly, and notably resistant to working loose on slack, flogging lines — that slack-security is its one clear edge over the plain bowline. On very slippery synthetic line the bare knot is marginal; the standard fix is to double it with an extra pass. None of this has been independently lab-tested — the evidence is sailing-press and practitioner reporting.
Downsides
- Needs careful dressing: loose sections left in the body can work under cyclic load.
- Slower, less intuitive to tie, and a silent mis-tie — reverse the loop's handedness and you get a different knot that won't fall apart to warn you.
- Hard to inspect (near-identical to a bowline) and little recognised outside French sailing.
- Not for slippery high-tech line bare: on Dyneema-type rope, double it — or better, use a spliced or hardware loop.
History
The Sylvain is a genuinely modern knot — invented around 2018 by Sylvain Berger, a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers in France, and introduced through the Guild. Voile Magazine gave it its definitive feature in January 2019 under the headline "Ceci n'est pas un nœud de chaise" — "This is not a bowline" — because the two look like two drops of water. It appears in no pre-2018 text, though guild tyers argue the underlying structure belongs to a long-existing family of crossing-hitch loop knots — a re-discovery as much as an invention.
How to Tie the Sylvain Bowline
This is the sequence published in Voile Magazine, tied in the free end of the rope. Take it slowly the first few times — the twist direction matters (see the safety notes) — and our knot tying cards are handy for drilling it.
Step 1
Form a loop by laying the working end over the standing part.
Step 2
Pass the working end under the loop, through its middle, so it visually cuts the loop in two.
Step 3
Bring the working end back out from under the loop, then pass it back through the same hole in the opposite direction.
Step 4
Pass the working end over the loop, then thread it through the hole on the right formed in the previous step.
Step 5
Draw up and dress: the lock engages progressively as tension comes on, with the working end passing under the whole structure, parallel to the standing part.
Check your work: the tail should exit perpendicular to the loop, with the working end passing under the whole body of the knot, parallel to the standing part. Dress out any loose sections, snugging progressively rather than in one yank. Tying It Around a Ring or Post
There is also a hitch-style build for tying directly around a fitting — used for mooring rings and cleats.
Step 1
Form a loop with the working end over the standing part.

Form the attachment loop — the one going around the object — then pass the working end behind the U.

Is the Sylvain Bowline really a bowline?
Functionally yes — it's a fixed end loop used exactly where you'd use a bowline. Structurally no: expert tyers class it as a "quasi-bowline" built on a crossing hitch, closer to the Carrick and angler's loops than to a true bowline.
