How to Tie the Sliding Gear Toggle

Step 1:

Tie a simple overhand knot in the cord, working left over right.

Step 2:

Repeat the same left-over-right pass a second time through the identical crossing point.

Step 3:

Repeat a third time. The resulting triple-pass overhand is the core of the toggle.

Step 4:

Pull it snug in stages and stop the moment two turns show on one face of the coil and a single turn shows on the other.

Step 5:

Using a marlinspike or a similar pick, split open the two-turn face to open a "window" into the coil.

Step 6:

Split open the second face the same way, opening a second window.

Step 7:

Thread the working cord, strap, or item you're attaching through both windows.

Step 8:

Pull each side of the coil individually first to seat it, then pull both sides together at once to cinch the toggle fully around the threaded material.

Step 9:

Trim the cord ends to about 1/8 in (3 mm) on each side.

Step 10:

On paracord, melt the trimmed ends into a bead shape with a lighter. Let it cool before you touch it - molten paracord burns on contact.

FAQ

Can you tie this with a single strand instead of two separate cords?

Nobody's confirmed it. What's shown is always two cords: the bead is tied in one, then a second, separate cord or strap is threaded through the two windows before the final cinch. That second cord is what makes it a toggle instead of a plain stopper knot.

Does it work on shock cord or bungee?

The one report we've seen says no - paracord toggles slipped on shock cord for that user. The mechanism explains why: the bead holds by friction alone, and an elastic host that stretches and thins under a pull is close to the worst case for that kind of grip. Stick to ordinary paracord.

Can you adjust the length of the loop it's tied on?

Partly. The toggle slides along its host cord by hand while still gripping, which is how you change strap length on the umbrella carry or tension and release the pack lashing. What it doesn't give you is a bigger or smaller grip after the fact - the hold strength is fixed by how hard you cinched it when you built it.
