The name itself is solid religious-order history: from the Italian cappuccio, or hood — the pointed hood the Capuchin friars wore, the same root behind "cappuccino." One claim to retire: the friars' belt actually uses a different knot, ABOK #517 (the Franciscan Friar's Knot), not this heaving-line barrel.

How to Tie the Capuchin Knot

This is the marine, heaving-line-style method — a half-hitch start followed by three wraps, the most common convention for the Capuchin. (The exact number of turns is genuinely unsettled — anywhere from two to five shows up — so treat three as a sensible default, not a hard rule.)

Step 1

Form a half hitch: pass the working end over the standing part, creating a single straight half hitch.

Step 2

Step 4
