How to Tie the Precipice Knot

Usage

The Precipice Knot exists to solve a rope-economy problem: getting a single line back after you've used it to go one-way down a drop. Because the hitch is tied straight to a fixed anchor at the top instead of run double through a ring, the rope only needs to equal the height of the drop, not twice it. A sharp snap of the free end from below spills the hitch and lets you pull the whole rope down after you.

It's a Slippery Hitch tied round a natural anchor — a tree, in the original telling — with an Overhand Knot added to the tail as a small stopper.

Why Learn the Precipice Knot?

It's worth knowing as a piece of knot history and as a lesson in how quick-release hitches work: the same friction grip and slipped tuck that make a hitch instant to release under the right conditions are exactly what make it a poor choice to hang weight on. Quick-Release Fastening (Non-Critical Loads)

  • The base Slippery Hitch is a legitimate everyday quick-release fastening for things that don't matter if they drop — a mainsheet on a small boat, a gasket binding a stowed sail, a halyard hitched to a peg. Use the plain Slippery Hitch for this, not the full Precipice composite; the trailing Overhand is specific to the descent trick below.

Security Level

Low. This is a slipped, quick-release hitch by design — it grips only while the standing part is under steady load and is built to spill the instant the free end is disturbed. It is not a secure knot in any sense that matters for holding a person, and it should never be used to weight a person over a drop.

Downsides

  • Non-redundant: a single, deliberately spillable hitch is the only thing between a climber and the ground — there's no backup anchor in the system.
  • Releases to disturbance, not just intent: slack, vibration, or a snagged free end can spill it, not only a deliberate pull.
  • No modern test data: no breaking-strength, security, or slip-test data exists for this knot anywhere.
  • Nearly unknown outside the book: it has essentially no modern practitioner community to draw on for guidance.

History

The Precipice Knot is Clifford Ashley's own design, published in his 1944 reference The Ashley Book of Knots as entry #391. Ashley wrote that he was asked by a mountain-climbing club official for a knot a solo climber could spill from below after descending, and the Precipice Knot was his answer to that request — not a knot he catalogued from existing trade practice. How to Tie the Precipice Knot

Step 1

Select an anchor at the top of the drop — Ashley's example is a convenient tree.

Step 2

Tie a Slippery Hitch around the anchor: take a turn and hitch, then on the final tuck pass a bight of rope through instead of the full end, so pulling the free end will later collapse it instantly.

Step 3

Tie an Overhand Knot into the very end of the rope, beyond the hitch, as a trailing stopper.

Step 4

Descend on the single strand, not doubled — the rope only needs to equal the height of the drop.

Step 5

Once you're safely on the ground and the rope is unweighted, flirt the rope — snap, flick, or shake the standing part — to spill the Slippery Hitch from below and recover the whole rope.

FAQ

Is the Precipice Knot safe to climb or rappel on?

No. It is a single, deliberately quick-release slippery hitch holding your body weight on one line — the same mechanism that lets you recover the rope from below can spill the whole hitch if the free strand is disturbed while you're on it. Ashley himself warned non-experts to leave it alone. Use a redundant, tested modern descent system instead.

What is the Precipice Knot actually made of?
