How to Tie the Floor Lashing
Usage
The floor lashing is the technique to use when you need to turn a pile of poles into a flat surface — a camp table, a raised sleeping platform, a deck, or a raft floor. A run of parallel decking poles is laid across two support poles (the stringers), and one continuous rope binds every pole end down with quick loops.
Why Learn the Floor Lashing?
Most lashings join two poles at a single crossing. The floor lashing is purpose-built to bind a whole run of poles in one pass, far faster across a multi-pole deck than tying a separate square lashing at every crossing.

A floor lashing is a run of parallel decking poles laid across two stringers, each pole end bound down by loops of one continuous rope — in the dominant modern form, two loops per pole end, one inside and one outside the stringer, which is why current sources teach it as the Double Floor Lashing. The run starts and finishes with a clove hitch around the stringer. History
The floor lashing has no pre-20th-century pedigree — it belongs to American Scouting's pioneering curriculum. The earliest written construction source found is Gerald L. Findley's 1999 Rope Works knotboard reader, which teaches a single-loop version and a carpentry trick: alternate the butt ends of the poles so their natural taper cancels out. From 2013 on, Scout Pioneering's Double Floor Lashing became the dominant taught form.
How to Tie a Floor Lashing
To practice at tabletop scale before you build full-size, the dowels and cord in our Knot Tying Kit work well — practice cord only, not rated for weight-bearing builds. For full-size platforms the traditional choice is 1/4 in (6 mm) manila; for lighter lashing projects many campers use paracord such as our 750lb Bushcraft Paracord.
Step 1
Tie a clove hitch around the platform support (the stringer), on the inside of where the first floor spar will sit. Secure the short tail by wrapping it around the running end, twisting with the lay of the rope.
Step 2
Make a bight in the running end — double a length of rope back against itself to form a U — and pass it over the first floor spar, on the inside of the platform support.
Step 3
Grab this bight and pass it underneath the platform support.
Step 4
Loop the bight over the first floor spar, on the outside of the platform support.
Step 5
Tighten both loops around the first floor spar by pulling the running end — it extends between the first and second floor spars, on top of the platform floor.
Step 6
Repeat steps 2 through 5 for each floor spar until you reach the other end.
Step 7
Secure the running end to the far end of the platform support with tight half hitches — a finishing clove hitch.
Step 8 (Optional)
Before the final half hitches, take a frapping turn around the wraps, between the poles, to tighten the whole configuration further. This step is a documented add-on, not part of every version.
FAQ
What's the difference between Floor Lashing and Double Floor Lashing?
They may be the same knot at two stages of refinement, or two independently-named techniques — the sources don't say outright. The one written source describing a plain floor lashing (a 1999 knotboard reader) uses a single loop per pole end; every modern Scouting-taught source since 2013 uses "Double" or "Improved" Floor Lashing, with two loops per pole end for extra security.
Should I use floor lashing or square lashing to build a flat surface like a tabletop?
Both work. Floor lashing is faster across a whole run of parallel poles — one continuous rope, never re-threaded. Square lashing gives a stiffer per-joint bind but means tying a separate lashing at every crossing, slow for a multi-pole surface.
How strong is a floor lashing — can it hold a person's weight?
There's no formal breaking-strength or engineering test for this knot.
