How to Tie the Catalyst Hitch

Usage

The Catalyst Hitch is worth learning if you want a climbing hitch that advances with you instead of needing a hand on it at every move — it is used on moving-rope systems as a self-tending friction hitch, and climbers who run one report years of daily service on it.

It is tied from a separate hitch cord: a series of turns up the climbing line, then the free end brought back in as the working end and tucked under the bight crossing over the line. Under your weight the wraps bind and grip; unweight it and push it along, and it slides.

Why Learn the Catalyst Hitch?

Because its name is tangled with the Catalan, the Knut H and the Arbsession, and knowing which structure is on your line matters when you are hanging off it.

Knut Hitch vs. Catalyst Hitch

Same family, different hitches: the Catalyst derives from the Knut H, itself a variation of the Knut Hitch. Nobody has published a comparison of the two.

  • Advantage: the extra tuck is what climbers credit for the Catalyst's tending.
  • Disadvantage: that same extra strand makes its wrap pattern harder to read.

Distel Hitch vs. Catalyst Hitch

These two get mistaken for each other constantly, but the Distel Hitch is an eye-to-eye split tail, both eyes clipped to one carabiner.

  • Advantage: the Catalyst is the more actively self-tending of the pair.
  • Disadvantage: the Distel is more widely taught and easier to check at a glance.

Valdotain Tresse vs. Catalyst Hitch

Against the Valdotain Tresse, the mainstream benchmark, the trade is inspection against feel.

  • Advantage: climbers who use both report a smoother release under load.
  • Disadvantage: the VT is easier to verify visually — a real cost on a life-safety hitch.

Security Level

Dressed and set correctly, loaded in its working direction, this hitch holds — that is the report from climbers who use it daily. There is no measured margin to quote you. It is also dressing-sensitive: tight enough to grab reliably is harder to tend, and dressed looser it has been reported to let the grab go. Treat it as field-trusted but unproven, confirm the dressing before every climb, and back it up.

Downsides

  • Hard to verify at a glance: a mis-dress does not look obviously wrong.
  • Wrap count is not standardised: sources count "complete revolutions" differently, so one video's count does not transfer to the next.
  • Reported grab loss after tending: at least one climber reports it stops grabbing reliably until re-fiddled, and ties that to dressing tightness.
  • Thinly taught: far less universally taught than the older friction hitches.
  • Not a rescue hitch: established, tested friction hitches carry that job.

History

The Catalyst came out of the arborist online hitch-development community around 2019 to 2021; no source names whoever first tied it. It descends from the Knut H, shown by TreeBuzz member Brocky in October 2018 in the thread where the Knut H first appeared. By March 2021 the name was settled enough for arborist David Restrepo to place it in his association-based genealogy, Knots Mechanics: A Genealogy of Climbing Hitches for Arborists Based on Association, defining it as a Knut H whose free standing end re-enters under the bight over the climbing line. Short-form video carried it much wider from 2023 on.

One piece of the tangle is settled: the Catalyst is not the Catalan. Brocky records on The Tree House forum that "Catalan" was pinned on his Knut H by mistake in a set of device instructions, and also gets attached to the Arbsession.

How to Tie the Catalyst Hitch

Step 1

Lay a series of turns of hitch cord around the climbing line, in the manner of the Knut H — sources show two to three complete revolutions, so pick one reference and stay with it rather than mixing counts between videos.

Step 2

Bring the free standing end back in as the working end, instead of leaving it standing off as on a plain Knut H.

Step 3

Tuck that working end under the bight formed over the climbing line. This is the move that makes it a Catalyst; carry the end all the way through instead and you have a different hitch.

Step 4

If both tails should finish on the same side of the climbing line, take an additional half-wrap.

Step 5

Dress the wraps so they lie neatly parallel and snug, then confirm the pattern visually before you load it — and again before every climb.

FAQ

Why does mine stop grabbing after I tend it, until I fiddle with it again?

That is a reported and unresolved issue, not something to pin on the climber. One user traces it to dressing tightness: tight enough to grab reliably is harder to tend, loose enough to tend easily can let the grab go. Re-check the dressing, and keep the backup.

Has the Catalyst been tested?

No published load, slip or break test names the Catalyst. Everything anyone can tell you about how it holds comes from structure and from climbers who use it, never from measurement.

  • One direction only — loaded against its wrap direction it gives no grip.
