Usage
The slipped sheet bend is a quick-release way to join two ropes. It is an ordinary sheet bend with one change at the very end: instead of pulling the final tuck all the way through, you leave it as a loop. How to Tie the Slipped Sheet Bend
Step 1
Form a bight, a folded loop, in the end of the thicker rope. This is the "host" side of the knot. If the ropes are different sizes, always make the bight in the thicker one.
Step 2
Pass the working end, the end of the second rope you are actually moving, up through the bight, around behind both parts of the host rope, and back under its own standing part, the length that runs off to your hand. That is a normal sheet bend so far.
Step 3
Before you tighten, do the slipped move: instead of pulling the working end all the way through, tuck a bight, a loop of that end, back under the last crossing, right next to where it came out. Keep the loop good and large so it is easy to grab later.
Step 4
Pull the two standing parts to set the knot, and check that both free ends finish on the same side. Same-side ends hold noticeably better than opposite-side ends. Practicing on a length of 750 lb bushcraft paracord makes the tuck easy to see while you learn it.
