A woven or wrapped pouch cradles the stone at the midpoint of a doubled cord; one side finishes in a loop worn on the hand, the other in a release tab held between thumb and forefinger. Swing it to build speed, let the tab go at the top of the swing, and the stone flies.

Worth being clear on up front: this is a stone-throwing weapon, not a rope wrapped around a loose rock to make a climbing or camping anchor. The two get confused under the same "rock sling" name, but they're completely different objects doing completely different jobs.

How to Tie the Rock Sling (Simple)

Step 1

Take 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m) of paracord and fold it in half.

Step 2

Drape the doubled cord over your hand and wrap one side around your hand about 4 times, then slip the wraps off while keeping their loop shape — this is the start of the pouch, a method The Art of Manliness documents in full.

Step 3

Wrap one working end around the middle of the bundle and tie a simple overhand knot, then thread that working end back through the roughly 3 loops you formed.

Step 4

Repeat the same wrap-and-thread on the other side. A pouch forms in the middle, with a cord running off each side.

Step 5

Finish the retention end: tie a fixed loop for your hand or wrist. Art of Manliness's version uses a Bowline here, and it works well — the loop stays anchored to you through the swing.

Step 6

Finish the release end with an overhand stopper, gripped between thumb and forefinger and released deliberately at the top of the swing to launch the stone.

Safety note: don't tie the retention loop directly around a single finger — a snag while moving can hurt. Instead, lay the cord across your palm with the knot sitting by your little finger, make a fist so the knot sits outside your hand, and drop the cord between your index and middle finger; tie the release end between your index finger and thumb the same way.
