The Exploding Sheepshank Hitch is a quick-release rope-shortening hitch: a sheepshank knot secured with a toggle or marlingspike hitch at each end, rigged so one pull on a control line spills the whole knot from a distance. Use it on an attended, tension-maintained line — shortening a heavy hawser mid-rope, easing a backstay adjuster in a hurry, or casting a line loose at a moment's notice — and it can also serve for temporary, tide-tended boat mooring, provided the standing part never goes slack.

The word "exploding" is a modern layer — Ashley never used it for any sheepshank, and his own word for the knot coming undone was "spill."

How to Tie the Exploding Sheepshank Hitch

The trap here isn't the tying — it's which side the toggle tail exits on; a wrong-side toggle defeats the whole remote-release idea, so check that the ripcord sits on your side before you load the line. Step 1

Tie the base two-bight sheepshank around the line's slack: lay the rope in three parallel parts, forming two bights.

Step 2

At each nipping point, instead of a plain half hitch, seat a marlingspike hitch — or drive a tapering fid or toggle through the bight and lash it with turns of marline.

Step 3

Run a control line (the ripcord) to the toggle or spike, left accessible from the boat or from a distance.

Step 4

Tighten by pulling the standing part(s), and keep the line under roughly balanced tension at both ends.

Step 5

To release, pull the ripcord to withdraw the toggle or spike — the knot casts loose at once.
