How to Tie the Cossack Knot
Usage
The Cossack Knot gives you a fixed loop you can tie quickly, load hard, and still untie cleanly. It is catalogued here separately from the Eskimo Bowline: the Cossack Knot is the form carrying the Russian name Казачий узел, it is used in place of the bowline in Russian rope practice, and it is the non-slipped parent of the Kalmyk Loop.
Structurally it is a bowline with one move inverted: the working end enters the nipping loop from the opposite side, and the collar U-turns around the outgoing eye leg instead of around the standing part — the side under load. That change gives the knot its behaviour: it holds a wide-stretched loop well, resists being shaken loose, and opens easily once the load comes off.

Security Level
Treat the Cossack Knot as a utility loop, not a life-safety knot. It is not inherently secure and capsizes under high load unless well snugged, so set it hard and back it up with a stopper for anything beyond attended everyday work. For a fixed loop that has to hold a person, use a secured bowline such as the Bowline with a Yosemite Finish.

- Capsizes if loose: loaded before it is snugly dressed, it can collapse.

On arctic explorer John Ross's first expedition in 1818 the Inuit presented him a sled whose rawhide lashings contained several of these knots; it is now in the Museum of Mankind, London. The name this article uses comes from the Russian side: Lev Skryagin's Морские узлы (Marine Knots) records it as the Cossack knot and its slipped version as the Kalmyk loop, as Wikipedia sets out. The analytical name "anti-bowline" was coined later by Dan Lehman in discussion at the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
How to Tie the Cossack Knot
Step 1
Make an overhand loop — the nipping loop — near the working end.
Step 2
Bring the working end up through the loop.
Step 3
Pass it over and around the bight of the loop and collar it around the outgoing eye leg — the leg heading away to form the eye, not the standing part.
Step 4
Pass the working end back down through the nipping loop, entering from the side opposite a bowline's.
Step 5
Snug the collar around the outgoing eye leg, then draw the standing part to close the nipping loop and set it firmly. Finished, it shows a trefoil shape with the tail against the eye leg.
